Goals and Action Plans

LST is aimed at cultivating highly qualified interdisciplinary legal practitioners with the ability to lead and deal with changes and challenges. Therefore, it has set its goals toward integrating law, science, and technology, as well as emphasizing both theory and practice. In pursuit of these goals, ILST has developed the following action plans, which help define ILST as a unique and outstanding legal institute.

▪  Integration of Law, Science, and Technology
ILST is dedicated to promoting interdisciplinary education. It does not only provide comprehensive fundamental law courses, such as civil law, criminal law, administrative law, and constitutional law, which are designed for students with non-legal background, but also prudently focus on the following five fields of research: intellectual property law, info-communications law, biotechnology law, international & comparative law, and environmental & energy law. The structure and contents of the courses on these five fields will be further introduced in the “Curriculum” section. In addition, ILST is the pioneer in the field of AI and law and providing the very first AI law and policy course in Taiwan.
▪  Low Student-Teacher Ratio
The ILST master’s program has an average student-teacher ratio of 8:1. With a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ILST students are guaranteed to receive proper instruction for their studies and research. Moreover, students in the doctorate program approved in 2015 by the Ministry of Education, can enjoy more rigorous and personalized guidance. The more frequent interaction between teachers and students allow teachers to tailor learning paths according to each individual student’s needs, which is absolutely important to the students in their journey in law.
▪  Projects and Internships and/or Externships
In close proximity to prominent institutions and the Hsinchu Science-Based Industrial Park, ILST holds a dominant position for providing students with greater learning opportunities. By leveraging this dominance, ILST is aimed at combining theory and practice by establishing a close collaboration with the technology industry as well as other distinguished academic and research units.

Internship and/or externship opportunities including those from large law firms and legal departments of top technology corporations are provided by ILST to allow students to gain access to real-life application of legal instruments and theories. ILST continues to expand this access so that more ILST students can enjoy this privilege. In addition to internship opportunities, every student has the opportunity to participate in research projects spearheaded by ILST professors who are funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology and many other governmental or academic institutions. ILST also promotes inter-school research programs organized by its professors. These projects and programs serve as a platform for ILTS faculty members and students to conduct academic investigation on a large and deep scale. Solid training at ILST, along with invaluable and practical experiences, has enabled ILST students to explore diverse careers.

The outstanding achievements of ILST alumni demonstrate the progressive achievement of our goals and principles. Our alumni have set their career paths toward a wide range of legal-related institutes, which include colleges, top technology companies, bio-technology companies, law firms, legal science research institutions, and governmental organizations, where ILST students’ capacity as interdisciplinary legal practitioners is very well recognized. This impressive accomplishment has established the reputation and qualification of ILTS as an institute of law for science and technology that firmly and faithfully takes action towards realizing its goals.
