Institute of Law for Science and
Technology, NTHU
Background

National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) was formerly known as Tsing Hua Academy which was established in 1911 at Tsing Hua Garden in Beijing. It was renamed National Tsing Hua University in 1928 when it underwent curriculum expansion and became a full-fledged university. In 1956, NTHU was restored to its current campus in Hsinchu, Taiwan.

NTHU has consistently ranked as one of the premier universities and is widely recognized as the best training ground for future industry and academic leaders in Taiwan, as exemplified by its outstanding alumni such as Nobel laureates in physics, Dr. Cheng-Ning Yang and Dr. Tsung-Dao Lee; Nobel laureate in chemistry, Dr. Yuan-Tseh Lee; and Wolf Prize winner in mathematics, Dr. Shiing-Shen Chern.

Despite its prominence, NTHU never rests on its laurels. Being one of the leaders in the fields of science and technology, it is aware that given the fast and often revolutionary development of science and technology, there is a desperate need of cultivating professionals that have the regulatory perspective.

Responding to this need, the Institute of Law for Science and Technology (ILST) was established. ILST was the very first legal institute for science and technology certified by the Ministry of Education in Taiwan. With its outstanding master’s program, ILST has been cultivating students with remarkable academic and practical achievements in the field of law and science and technology for two decades. In 2014, ILST decided to take its accomplishment in interdisciplinary education to the next level. A doctorate program was established in 2015. ILST is poised to lead and to remain strong in the area of law, science, and technology in Taiwan.
